Learning to sew is so hard, and one of the first things my students come to me asking is about learning sewing terminology! As it is like learning another language!

What is a seam allowance?

Is the fabric edge or amount that extends beyond the stitching line of the seam.

Let's explain this a little further!

So, take a look at your seam on your garment now. All that stripe of fabric past where the seam is sewn, that is what is called the seam allowance.

It is there as an allowance so your fabric  does not fray apart and used to actually sew a seam.

The seam allowance amount varies from garment to garment and pattern to pattern. But every pattern is constructed with a particular seam allowance in mind for the garment to go together correctly and to have the planned fit and size when complete.

It is very important to follow the exact seam allowance required, most commercial pattern use a 1.5cm seam allowance. But general amounts on clothing can range from 6mm to 1.5cm.

Your seam allowance may be pressed  and seam finished open. This is typical of high end and vintage garments.

Or you may have a closed seam allowance. This is typical in mass manufactured garments.

All these sewing terms  build off one another, so see the whole Sewing Terminology series here

Until next time...
