How to choose a sewing machine and 3 buying tips for how to pick a sewing machine for a beginner!

I get asked all the time from people wanting to learn to sew, just what sewing machine should they buy. When you just learning to sew it can be overwhelming with the amount of choice!

There are not too many things you really need really! Especially when you’re a beginner!

And you defiantly don’t need all the bells and whistles that you think you do!

So here are my top 3 tips when you’re looking to buy a sewing machine!

So my top 3 tips are:

  • The weight of the machine

Is it heavy? Does it have enough weight that is won’t rattle off the table? This is where vintage machines are great!2

  • Does it sew nice?

Give it a test run and see how you like it! Do you like the feel of how the fabric runs under the sewing machine? Is is smooth? Or does it feel awkward?

  • Stitch selection

You really only need 2 stitches… A straight stitch and a zig zag stitch! That will get you through a long time sewing! And if you’re upgrading, look for a one step button hole. You really don’t need all those fancy things!

I hope that you find this useful when you’re looking for your first, or next sewing machine!

Which tip did you find the most useful?

Or do you have another tip to add?
