Welcome to
Evelyn
Wood's
discovery began when she was working on her Masters Degree at the
University of Utah shortly after WW11. She submitted an 80 page term
paper to her
professor Dr. C. Lowell Lees and then watched in amazement as he read
and graded it in less than ten minutes.
His untrained reading rate: 2500 words per minute, yet he could
not explain how he did it. Mrs. Wood, a school teacher, began to wonder
if she could do the same thing and if there were others with similar
skills. A two year search turned up some 50 people from all walks of
life, teenagers to an eighty year old. They could read from 1500 to
6000
words per minute, and understand and remember what they had read.
Analysing them she found they read more than one word at a time, seeing
words
in meaningful patterns, and moved their eyes quickly, smoothly, and
easily down the page. They adjusted their speed to the type of material
they
were reading and knew how to find the thoughts in a paragraph, and the
central idea in an article or book. "The purpose
of reading," Mrs. Wood wrote, "is to get the information, feeling, and
understanding the author is trying to convey. And, gauged by this
purpose, these natural readers succeeded admirably."
Painstakingly Mrs. Wood began to teach herself these principles, until she was able to read several thousand words per minute, and along the way had developed a system for teaching others. Tested and proven at the University of Utah, in 1959 the first Institute was opened in Washington DC and the process was started that has altered forever the the way people learn from written sources. Since then the course has expanded throughout the United States, to Australia in 1968, and around the world.
As fast as you can THINK .
The saddest commentary by ordinary readers is the familiar "I can't seem to concentrate when I read" or "I can't remember anything I've just read". These all to common comments are caused directly by slow reading. People who read rapidly generally have better concentration and comprehension because their reading speed is keeping pace with their thinking speed! Once you learn to read by sight only, you will be able to read groups of words, whole ideas with each glance. It is remarkable that only in reading do you limit your eyes to a single symbol. You look at a painting or scene entirely, not left to right, not a section at a time. If your purpose in reading changes, as in study, then you may choose to break it down if required.

All graduates of Reading Dynamics acquire Lifetime Membership that enables them to improve and hone their skills through continuation classes, as often as they wish, tuition free*. This unique world wide Graduate Program provides a stimulating environment that will help you realize your full potential for learning,

No. The course is designed for people who can read an average book without stumbling over familiar words - a reading age of 11 or 12 is required.
DO YOU USE MACHINES?
No.
Studies
indicate that machine trained readers have limited improvement, usually
about double, and frequently lose most of this after they stop using
the device. They also tend to be inflexible and machines do not offer
"normal" reading conditions and cannot be
taken with you, Reading Dynamics expands the natural abilities you
were born with and enables you to take the skills with you into the
future. However with
interactive computer technology now reaching maturity we have released
a program to teach the basic reading improvement skills. The Evelyn
Wood Readers Edge Program is able to improve a
persons
reading speed and comprehension markedly. Study and recall skills
require (at this stage) the full course to be done to enable all the
course benefits to be achieved. To receive details of the software email to ewrd@evelynwood.com.au

TO SKIM OR NOT TO SKIM?
Usually it is the slow reader who claims that the fast reader must be skipping words. The slow reader points to old-fashioned courses that teach their students to be expert skimmers. They're right about the old-fashioned course! Test the comprehension of the most proficient skimmer and the best they can do - and then only inconsistently - is to give a rough idea of the material. They can't remember details. They lose all the flavour of the writing and are hopelessly lost in technical books. In Reading Dynamics you are taught to see every word on the page, but to read for meaning not words. Speed is increased by reading many words at once...not by reading one of many words.
DOES AGE MATTER?
Our students have ranged in age from 9 to 90. However we recommend younger students attain high school before enrolling,
IS THE COURSE OF INSTRUCTION DIFFICULT?
No, if you mean does it require special talent. Yes, if you are a lazy student. Success is related to the effort put in...the more effort the better the results. You should also be prepared to practice up to one hour per day between lessons, in your own material, to adapt and extend the skills.
IS IT DIFFICULT TO LEARN?
Learning to read Dynamically is like learning a musical instrument or sport, but not nearly as difficult. You progress at your own speed in a relaxed atmosphere. The success of Reading Dynamics lies in its ability to teach over 99% of its students.
CAN YOU GET GOOD COMPREHENSION?
Yes. Our own and independent tests show that comprehension and retention, along with speed, increases. Faster reading encourages better concentration, and enjoyment, as slow reading can be dull and discouraging.
CAN TECHNICAL MATERIAL BE READ THIS WAY?
Yes. The flexibility offered by faster reading rates, and the study techniques, give the reader the ability to adapt to all reading situations. Great emphasis is placed in the course on technical material because of its dominance in the average persons reading load.
WILL YOU MAINTAIN YOUR READING SKILLS?
Yes, as long as you continue to use them. Like a sport or musical instrument, if you only play occasionally your performance will vary widely. Regular use of your Dynamic Reading skills, along with occasional practice to keep them sharp, will give you abilities that will last a lifetime.
Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics provides a solution to the reading and study part of these problems.
Reading Dynamics is taught to the general public, nation-wide, on a regular basis.
Reading Dynamics is available on nearly all University campuses at least once each year.
Reading Dynamics is taught to Companies, Associations and Government Departments.
The ability to process and assimilate large quantities of written material will become more and more valuable as my service career progresses. Peter Lloyd, Officer, RAAF.
Enabled me to study more effectively and cover more study material in available time. Positive attitude to be able to keep up with reading current affairs and not feeling time will be "taken away" from study time. Brian Spain, MD.
This technique of reading has greatly increased my capacity to assimilate large amounts of technical detail quickly. It has also allowed me to develop a more flexible approach to reading. Surprisingly I find it even works in translating foreign language material. Theodore Macdonald, Professor of Education.
I have learnt to differentiate between reading information that is important to me and information that isn't. I will now be better able to keep up with the level of reading required for my job. Biju Kewalram, Systems Analyst.
Increased interest and understanding in material read. Improvement in study methods which have already been used and appreciated. Victoria Smith, University Student.
Dynamic Reading has given me guidelines on how to improve my grades by reading quicker with better comprehension. It has also given me ideas on how to study effectively - something I have never been taught at University. Karen Van Wierst, Student .
Dynamic Reading has imparted to me a life-long skill which I can utilize anytime. Reading is a favourite pastime of mine and Dynamic Reading has certainly enhanced my enjoyment of reading. Sonny Phua, University Student.
